Benefits of the Gonstead Method

The Gonstead chiropractic was developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead, dubbed one of the most influential figures in the history of chiropractic medicine and the result of his 55 years spent in clinical practice. His comprehensive research and experience created the Gonstead method, which is still widely used by chiropractors today and is considered the standard of excellence in the chiropractic profession.

Dr. Gonstead used five specific criteria in order to analyze the biochemical imbalance in the spine so that specific and accurate corrections to the position of the spine can be achieved. The goal of this treatment is to center the vertebrae on the disc to restore function to damaged spinal joints and calm nerve irritation.

The five principles of the Gonstead method

The five principles of the Gonstead method are as follows:

  1. Visualization. Your chiropractor will use their own eyes to assess your posture and movement for any abnormalities.
  2. Instrumentation. Your chiropractor will use a special handheld instrument that is guided down the spine in order to detect any areas that are abnormally warm, which can be indicative of inflammation of the spinal cord.
  3. Static palpation. Your chiropractor will feel your spine in a stationary position to check for any tightness or other abnormalities.
  4. Motion palpation. As above, expect your chiropractor will undertake this assessment while you are moving and bending at various angles so that it is possible for them to see how each segment of your spine moves.
  5. X-ray analysis. This gives your chiropractor an opportunity to visualize your entire spinal structure in order to ascertain the best course of treatment for you.
